BIG idea

"Build it and they will come"

Details
The design concept for the new sports complex at Canandaigua’s Academy Building began with the idea to connect two levels of playing fields with a complex that includes grandstands; team rooms; concession stands and storage buildings. The topography lent itself to the construction of two story buildings serving both the upper track and grass field with the lower multipurpose turf field. The design creatively carves away portions of a hill whose slope matches the required sightlines for viewing. Portions of the hill remain between the built structures and can be seen at a grass seating area and terraced retaining walls. Viewpoints from the grandstands influenced the massing of the concession building which is constructed from structural masonry brick. Contrasting metal wall panels; large scale graphic wall panels and LED lighting enhance the experience of attending a night time sporting event.

Canandaigua City School’s District voters approved two propositions in December 2014. Proposition 1 ($5.79 million) includes district-wide security improvements, improvements to tennis courts at the Middle School, and a new all-weather track at Canandaigua Academy. Proposition 2 is a $7.58 million new multi-purpose turf field, installation of a new track with irrigated  grass field, multipurpose field lighting, grandstand seating, locker room facilities, concession stands and restrooms.
